It’s a myth that people resist change. They change all the time. What they resist most is being forced to change without their involvement or permission.
That’s not to say change is always easy – even if you want to do it. The main reason people fail at making improvements isn’t because they’re resisting change – it’s because it can be downright daunting to break an old habit or create a new one. And when taking control of our habits gets too hard, it generally leads to one of two outcomes – both bad:
We fall ever deeper into habits that can bring us down
We fail to optimize our potential with habits that can lift us up
So what’s a body to do?
The answer isn’t “just buck up and do it anyway.” That approach is doomed to fail every time. The key is to strengthen your natural ability to embrace and sustain the process of change and improvement itself!
In other words – “build your improvement muscles” so you can take on change with greater ease and less pain and effort whenever and wherever the need or the opportunity show up.
Here’s how Kevin Kelly puts it in his book, Excellent Advice for Living: “Don’t focus on getting into shape. Focus on becoming the kind of person who never misses a workout.” (Italics emphasis mine)
That same principle goes to the heart of why top-performing organizations rely on routine processes for engaging everyone on their team in Systematic Continuous Improvement! The more everyone is engaged in a regular “improvement workout routine,” the stronger they get. What’s more, the cumulative effect of all those gains over time can produce massive bottom-line impact.
