Do a little good.

December 21, 20252 min read

We’ve all heard the sage phrase, “It’s the little things that count.”

Simple as it sounds, that idea goes to the heart of Systematic Continuous Improvement (SCI).

I thought about that connection recently when I was watching the holiday movie Spirited and listening to the final song “Do a Little Good.” Beneath the musical theatrics, several lines convey the mindset and methods SCI is built on:

“So try to do a little good / Maybe give a little more … than you did the day before.”

“It only takes a little good / And some doin’ what you can.”

That’s more than a pep talk. It conveys the spirit and substance of SCI.

It’s important to understand, though, the real power of SCI comes when improvement isn’t left to chance or occasional ideas from a few motivated individuals who want to “give a little more.” Game-changing results only happen when improvement becomes a routine process that every employee engages in as part of their job.

When people are given regular opportunities, along with structures and support to act on their ideas, small improvements stop being random. They build up systematically over time to create a huge cumulative impact.

The song captures that idea perfectly:

“You can give the world some good / In the daily give-and-take / With every ripple, ripple, ripple that you make.”

“Whether it’s Christmas Day or a day in May,” like the song says, sustained progress comes from people choosing, again and again, to “do a little good.”
