Don't be fooled by false trade offs.

February 17, 20251 min read

Of all the bogus beliefs and misguided myths in business, one of the zaniest is that it’s a waste of time to work on improving the so-called “small stuff.” According to that bone-headed fallacy, if you don’t focus on a few large priorities, you will squander your time chipping away at minutia of little consequence, fooling yourself into believing that you’re making meaningful progress.

I get it. You don’t want to waste people’s time. On the flip side, you don’t want to waste people’s talent.

Point is – it’s a false trade-off because you can and should pursue BOTH!

The key is using the right tools and processes for each path and each person.

At the enterprise level where big decisions are made by leadership and bold actions are carried out, getting clear and focused on a few goals and priorities makes good sense. You can only manage so many major initiatives if you want to avoid getting the team fragmented and overwhelmed.

At the individual level where people encounter countless opportunities for micro-improvements on a regular basis, tapping that treasure trove can deliver huge cumulative gains and savings with a measured investment of time and resources. The trick to optimizing outcomes is to ensure that the processes are routine and efficient, not just some random one-off activity.
