Systematic Continuous Improvement (SCI) Insights

Solve the root of the problem.

Are You Improving by Chance… or by Choice?

March 30, 20261 min read

Most organizations improve how they do things once in a while, or they wouldn’t survive the test of time.

But left to chance, improvement is sporadic. It’s anemic. A good idea here. A fix there. Maybe even an occasional breakthrough. But it’s inconsistent, often reactive, and usually comes from a handful of people.

Improvement by choice is different.

It’s a built-in routine. It shows up in how teams meet, how problems are discussed, and how ideas for fixes are captured and acted on. It’s not a program or a random activity—it’s a deliberate, repeatable practice. Not occasionally. Not when something goes wrong. But as a built-in habit for the way work gets done.

At its best, that habit taps into a huge opportunity most organizations leave on the table every day: the front-line insight and hidden talents of every person on their team.

Bottom line, the biggest difference in the impact of choice over chance is about having — or not having — a routine for engaging all employees in a process for systematic continuous improvement (SCI).

When employees are involved in that kind of structured ongoing routine, they see their work differently. They’re more alert to friction points and opportunities. They take greater ownership. They build what I call their “improvement muscle.” And with each “lift,” each small boost, that muscle gets stronger.

The eventual result is countless incremental savings and gains that compound into significantly improved performance, increased efficiency, and higher morale that keeps growing over time.

That doesn’t happen by chance. It happens by choice—by deciding that improvement is a continuous systematic process that’s built into the rhythm of daily work.

If you're ready to make improvement a choice … let's talk!
