They had the procedures. They still couldn't pass the test.

Sabreliner repairs and remodels aircraft. In that business, quality isn't optional. Mistakes can ground airplanes, disappoint customers, and jeopardize safety.

Several years ago, Sabreliner was struggling to meet important quality standards required for ISO certification. Leadership knew the requirements. They had documented procedures. Employees had been trained. Yet performance wasn't where it needed to be.

Like many organizations, Sabreliner was putting a lot of emphasis on improving performance. What they hadn't figured out was how to tap fully into the knowledge and commitment of the people using those processes every day.

When employees were given routine processes for identifying problems, suggesting solutions, and improving the way work was done, something remarkable happened.

Quality, safety and productivity all improved. And after the first year, their ISO score jumped to an all-time high of 96%.

Here’s the lesson from their experience. The most earnest efforts in the world won't deliver superior results unless employees are actively engaged in routine, imbedded processes for systematic continuous improvement (SCI).

When that happens, employees open up freely to identify and implement improvements. Quality stops being something management has to spout about, and the results end up exceeding what management wanted in the first place.
