I was talking with a young relative recently – a man in his late twenties-early thirties – and I asked him what he does for a living.
“Oh, I work in a warehouse – just driving a forklift,” he said. “I’m thinking about getting into a trade, though, maybe HVAC.”
His response struck me with two conflicting emotions. On one hand, I was happy for him considering other job options that would be more rewarding for him. On the other hand, I was sad to hear him use the word “just” in describing the work he does now.
“Driving a forklift is important work, Travis,” I told him. “Without people like you, warehouses would be messed-up dumping grounds, and not everyone can do it well.”
“Yeah, I guess so,” he replied half-heartedly.
That conversation goes to the heart of a crucial message I preach – that so many people go about their day-to-day work thinking it’s “just” a job. It’s a terrible waste, and it doesn’t have to be that way. With an open mind and the right engagement methods, ANY organization can elevate the value and enjoyment of ANY type of work for ANY employee by tapping the talent that goes unused beyond their “job box.”
One highly effective way of doing that is with processes that engage all employees in Systematic Continuous Improvement (SC). Aside from the obvious benefit of getting regular input on how to improve the way work is done, people feel heard, valued and taken seriously for what they have to say. It also satisfies the innate desire for all people to contribute to their team’s success, and to have some control over the decisions and actions that affect their lives in the workplace.
Lots of people are like Travis, feeling they were meant for more.
