 When patterns become prisons

May 12, 20251 min read

Patterns. Processes. Habits. Routines. They all play an essential role in helping people and businesses stay on track with repeatable predictability.  That’s a good thing.

But what happens when those patterns and processes become so rigidly fixed that we can’t see another – perhaps better – way of doing things?

The famed photographer, Dewitt Jones, says, “Our patterns, too long unquestioned, become our prisons. Break the pattern! And see the scene before you with new eyes.”

That vital idea goes to the heart of what it takes to become a sustainably superior business. Patterns and habits are good to a point. But they also can seduce and sedate us into an unchanging comfort zone. That’s especially true when those habits work as well as we need them to perform.

So how do you make sure your patterns don’t keep you blindly stuck in repeating processes that do nothing to move you forward – that block you from innovating and finding ways to do what you do better than before?

Here’s the key. Since humans love their patterns and routines, you need to create an intentional habit for improvement to replace the default habit of doing things over and over again the same way.

That’s where Systematic Continuous Improvement comes in. You need established regular processes that are imbedded in the work routines of every employee to bring ideas for improvement to the table. It’s one of the best ways to ensure that you stay a step ahead of the competition – always and forever.
