Well-established habits and processes make work smoother and more predictable. That’s usually a good thing. But even effective routines can outlive their usefulness when no one stops to question them.
In her book, Better Than Before, Gretchen Rubin puts the danger emphatically: “Habit makes it dangerously easy to become numb to our own existence.”
The same thing can happen across an organization. People repeat familiar practices, work around recurring frustrations and accept engrained flaws because “that’s how we’ve always done it.” They may see better ways of working, but without a regular opportunity to raise and explore them, those ideas rarely see the light of day.
Systematic Continuous Improvement (SCI) opens the door to that opportunity. In a routine team huddle, for example, employees identify small improvements, decide on actions to pursue, assign ownership and follow progress. The process creates an intentional habit of examining the organization’s embedded way of working so they don’t get numb and resigned to the old ways of doing things.
Just as important, it gets the people closest to the work engaged in identifying possibilities that managers often miss. When their ideas are routinely invited and implemented, improvement no longer depends on occasional initiatives or a handful of decision-makers. Instead, it becomes part of how the organization operates – and how everyone contributes to its ongoing superior success.
