Systematic Continuous Improvement (SCI) Insights

small steps, big gains

What's the big deal with the small stuff?

October 21, 20241 min read

I sometimes get doubt and dissent from managers when I hammer on the importance of the so-called “small stuff” in getting employees to come forward with improvement ideas.

Why is that so important?

Big is slow; small is fast.

Big is hard; small is easy.

Big is scary; small is safe.

Big is pricey; small is affordable.

Big is daunting; small is no big deal.

The biggest reason of all? Cumulative impact. What you do every day to make improvements, however small, has far greater impact in the long run than what you do once in a while, however big.

And here’s the bonus for managers who are fixated on the “big stuff.” As the famed scientist, Linus Pauling, said, “The best way to have a good idea is to have lots of ideas.”

If you want to get your team filling the improvement bucket to the brim, click on the link below to learn how to build a culture of systematic continuous improvement.
