Stop treating improvement like it's extra credit.

July 14, 20252 min read

Too often, people think of improvement as something to fit in after the “real work” is done. It’s like extra credit. Truth is, extra credit may be optional in school, but in a successful business, improvement isn’t extra work. It is the work.

What is work really about, anyway? Serving customers better. Reducing waste. Making processes smoother. Giving people the time and the tools to be the best at getting better. It takes systematic continuous improvement to drive that. When improvement is treated as an add-on, it always gets pushed aside because there’s never a magical free hour that shows up every week.

Getting there starts with busting the myth that improvement takes time away from productive work. Fact is, systematic improvement creates productive work time.

Here are some tips on build improvement into day-to-day operations:

  • Hold weekly team huddles focused solely on improvement.
Set aside time where everyone can identify problems, share ideas, and plan actions. When improvement is part of the routine, people engage and follow through.

  • Emphasize the value of small improvements.
Explain how they build into a mountain of gains that have huge cumulative impact.

  • Connect improvements to purpose.
Remind people how each change makes work safer, easier, faster, or better for customers and team members alike.

  • Make it visible.
Use simple tracking tools to show ideas, actions, and completions. Visibility creates accountability and pride.

  • Clarify expectations.
Make it clear that improvement is everyone’s job, not an optional extra for when time allows.

When improvement becomes the way we work, productivity rises, morale grows, and people feel proud knowing they’re shaping a better future – not just getting through the day.
